Why Comprehensive Screening Matters

It is more common than not for learning challenges to overlap. When a specific difficulty is identified, it is essential to conduct a thorough screening to explore potential underlying literacy-based issues. These may include phonological processing skills, such as the ability to perceive, manipulate, and blend sounds—skills that are foundational to reading and language development.

Beyond literacy, it’s equally important to assess spelling, handwriting, and both fine and gross motor coordination, as difficulties in these areas often affect academic performance, self-esteem, and may contribute to learning-related anxiety.

A comprehensive evaluation should also include an assessment of memory functions—including motor memory, short-term memory, and working memory—as challenges in these domains can significantly hinder learning and confidence.

Additionally, sequencing and processing skills must be considered. If these are not properly identified, children may be mistakenly perceived as unmotivated, inattentive, or slow, when in fact they are simply struggling with skills that have not yet been adequately supported.

Equally important is an understanding of a child’s sensory sensitivities. Many children experience heightened sensitivity to light, sound, texture, taste, movement, or social environments. These sensitivities can cause discomfort or anxiety, making it difficult for a child to focus or engage in learning. Creating a calm, predictable, and responsive environment where the child feels physically and emotionally safe is often the first step toward successful learning. When children feel secure, their ability to absorb, retain, and apply new information increases significantly.

By taking all these factors into account, we can provide truly individualised, compassionate, and effective support that empowers children to reach their true potential.
